TFNC Core Functions
Programu za Lishe (Nutrition Programs): TFNC designs, leads, and implements national nutrition programs that aim to improve nutritional standards across Tanzania.
Tafiti za lishe (Nutrition Research): The Centre conducts scientific and applied nutritional research to guide policies, interventions, and strategic national decisions.
Mafunzo na Elimu ya lishe kwa Umma (Public Nutrition Education): TFNC offers training and public education to raise awareness and promote healthy nutrition practices at the community and institutional level.
Huduma za maabara (Laboratory Services): The Centre provides laboratory services supporting nutrition assessment, food safety monitoring, and related research.
Uratibu wa masuala ya lishe nchini (National Nutrition Coordination): TFNC serves as the national focal point, coordinating stakeholders and strategies on nutrition matters and ensuring alignment with government objectives.
Achievements & Strategic Research (2025/26)
TFNC, established under the Food and Nutrition Act CAP 109 (1973), operates to guide government and national policy through research, capacity building, and public education for improved food security and nutrition resilience.
For 2024/25, TFNC will conduct major studies, including:
The Cost of Hunger in Africa (COHA): Measures the impact of hunger and malnutrition on socio-economic development in Tanzania.
Nutrition system assessments and utilization studies in major cities like Dar es Salaam, coordinated under the National Food Fortification program (FORTIMAS).
TFNC’s ongoing priorities focus on strengthening national food security, expanding nutrition awareness, coordinating laboratory and field research, and fortifying institutional networks to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) related to hunger and malnutrition by 2025/26.
